Film’s Journey to Reality

In November 2018, Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films embarked on a cinematic quest focused on Jaime Reyes / Blue Beetle. Screenplay crafted by Mexican-born Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, guided by Zev Foreman as executive producer at Warner Bros., making history as the pioneering live-action superhero film with a Latino lead, within the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).

December 2020 unveiled DC Films’ new strategy: a lineup of mid-budget films exclusively on HBO Max, a departure from conventional theater releases. Walter Hamada, DC Films’ president, aimed to rejuvenate the DCEU, with Blue Beetle in the spotlight for 2021.

By February 2021, Puerto Rican director Angel Manuel Soto led the charge. Reyes’ Blue Beetle took precedence after exploring various ideas, aligning seamlessly with Warner Bros.’s vision.

In April, Blue Beetle was set for DC’s 2022-2023 lineup. August marked John Rickard, Safran Company’s president of production, taking the reins as HBO Max’s producer. Filming was anticipated in early 2022.

December 2021 brought a twist: from HBO Max exclusive to a grand theatrical release in August 2023. Soto’s captivating vision fueled this shift.

In April 2022, Soto and cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelski immersed themselves in El Paso, infusing the narrative with local essence.

October introduced Peter Safran as producer, later co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios alongside James Gunn. This dynamic duo steered the ship, with contributions from Rickard and Foreman.

Box Office Performance

Up to August 29, 2023, Blue Beetle has amassed $47.8 million in the United States and Canada, along with $35.8 million in other territories, culminating in a global sum of $83.6 million.

Upon its release in the United States and Canada, Blue Beetle shared the stage with Strays. Projections for its opening weekend, spanning 3,871 theaters, aimed at a $25–32 million gross. On the film’s first day it yielded $10 million, inclusive of $3.3 million from Thursday night previews. It then went on to debut at $25 million, securing the top spot and notably unseating Barbie. Of the opening weekend viewers, 39% were Hispanic and 66% were male. David Zaslav, Warner Bros. CEO and president attributed the modest domestic opening to Tropical Storm Hilary, impacting the Hispanic population in Southern California. This translated into a worldwide debut of $43 million, a performance labeled by Variety as “one of the most muted beginnings in the DC Cinematic Universe’s history.” Moving into its second weekend, the film experienced a 51% decline, garnering $12.2 million and securing the third position, trailing Gran Turismo and Barbie.
